A Brief History of IRC
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) was created in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen to replace an older messaging system on the UNIX-based systems at the University of Oulu in Finland. It quickly became one of the most popular methods of communication on the internet, providing a simple way for people to chat with each other in real time. Over the years, IRC evolved with new features, networks, and channels emerging, but its core principle of real-time text communication has remained unchanged.
Despite the rise of modern chat apps, IRC still has a dedicated community of users who appreciate its simplicity, open protocols, and minimal resource consumption.
